One Year Without Meta: You Can Do This Too!

A year ago, I hit delete on WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook. Not as a test or a trial, but as a permanent choice. These apps had been woven into my daily life for years, the default way I chatted, shared, and even killed time. But the constant noise, the algorithmic manipulation, and the feeling of being a product instead of a person had become too much. I was done.

The first few days and weeks were weird. No pings, no Stories, no endless scroll to numb my brain during downtime. I’d grab my phone out of habit, only to remember: there was nothing to check. No timeline to refresh, no algorithm telling me what to look at next. Just silence.

It took time to adjust. I wrote about it three months in [1]:

“Without Instagram, there is simply less noise. No more infinite Stories or the pressure to post something polished.”

Here is the truth: I do not miss it. Not even a little. Without the distraction, I read more, spend more time outside and reconnect with hobbies I had neglected. The quiet did not just grow on me; I depend on it now. Sure, friends sometimes say, “Oh right, you do not have Instagram/Whatsapp,” but my reaction is just meh. I do not care. If someone really wants to share something with me, they will find a way.

The better alternatives

I replaced Instagram with Bluesky and recently moved my data to EuroSky [5], a European hosted server. Bluesky is perfect for me. It is not an Instagram alternative, but I use it that way anyway. With apps like Flashes, which tap into the Bluesky feed, my photos look just like they did on Instagram, but without the algorithms and ads. The AT Protocol means I am not locked in. If Bluesky changes for the worse, I can take my data and go. That is freedom Meta will never give you.

I also started using Lemmy through the Thunder app as a Reddit alternative. It is not as slick, but it is decentralized and free from ads and tracking. The conversations feel more real, more focused on shared interests than algorithmic engagement.

For messaging, I use iMessage usually for new people I meet or stubborn friends (you know who you are :D), but I prefer Signal by far. The recent lawsuit about Meta reading WhatsApp messages [3] only confirmed my decision. If you are using WhatsApp, your privacy is not in your hands. Signal is perfect for me: it’s honestly exactly the same as Whatsapp but it keeps evolving, keeps adding new features and it is truly private.

The only big tech I am still tangled up with is Apple. I love my iPhone. It is reliable and integrates well with my other devices. But I am at a crossroads. The new iPhone 17e is tempting, but part of me wants to try a Fairphone with /e/OS or Pixel with GrapheneOS to support more ethical tech. I have not decided yet, but I am thinking more critically about what I use and why.

Here is why you should leave too.

Yes, Instagram and WhatsApp still have that social gravity. Everyone is there, so leaving feels like you will miss out. But here is the thing: fuck it, just do it! You will not miss the noise, the ads or the feeling of being a product. What you will miss is the illusion of connection, because real connection does not happen in Stories or algorithmic feeds. It happens in real conversations, in shared experiences, in the quiet moments you reclaim when you step away.

My friends and I do #DonderUpdates (Dutch for Thursday Updates) via Signal. Every week, we share what is new and exciting in our lives. No algorithms, no ads, just us. It is deeper, it is real and it is better than any Story I ever posted. Posting Stories is quick and easy, but it is also meaningless. Try bringing your circle closer. You will benefit from it in ways you did not expect.

I get it. Most people will not leave until something really bad hits the news. But why wait? Do it for yourself. Do it before the bad news forces your hand. You do not need permission to want better for your digital life. You do not need to wait for a scandal to decide your privacy and time matter.

I am proof it is possible. My life did not fall apart. I did not lose touch with the people who matter. I just found better ways to stay connected, ways that respect me, my time and my values.

So if you are still on the fence, ask yourself: What is really holding you back? Fear of missing out? Or fear of what you might gain when you leave?

Trust me, its worth it!
